If you watch TV all!!!

Without first giving a bhashan on the state of Television in India today, I want to know: what do you 'watch' or 'would like to watch if given a choice'? There are many options and the platter is still not full but the poll next to this post tries to cover the length and breath of the kind of TV programming being unleashed on us these days.

A little bhashan 'cos I can't help it?

A decade ago, TV viewing was a family affair. There used to be a box in the middle of the living room which was at most times crowded around by family members. Sometimes friends and neighbours also joined in, usually uninvited. It was a social daily activity/event which encouraged bonding, discussions and dialogue. Affordability and variety in programming has changed all that today without me explaining how???

But the discussion and dialogue continues till today. So much so that mainstream news channels have dedicated shows to present highlights of last nights happenings. It all started with Saas, bahu aur Saazish on Star News if I'm correct and now its an epidemic that has not spared even MTV, if you managed to catch MTV STRIPPED. It's an awesome show that mocks back at today's programming and viewing culture.

Still there is no defining good TV or bad TV. It's all about your sensibility and of course, TRPs. There is a wide variety of content across a wide variety of competing channels. The viewer it seems is spoilt with choices, that's the general perception. But as usual I beg to disagree. Infact, I feel content is just thrust upon us. There is no innovation. It's all cut, copy and paste from the west. What sells is best! - is what most TV gurus and marketing pundits would agree to and its quite right to. We are all part of a big social and marketing experiment.

Crorepati worked so we had 3 other channels aping the same. Indian Idol worked and we had another 3 channels aping it, same goes for Roadies and now Bigg Boss. Something clicks and then there is a bandwagon full of similar fairs packaged and presented differently, same fail and some come back season after season. My question is where is the choice. Look at the on air programmes. Bigg Boss on Colors, Big Switch on Bindass, Perfect Bride on Star Plus, Pati Patni aur woh on NDTV Imagine - all sharing the same premise of being locked together in a limited space trying to outsmart each other by bringing out their worst in front of the whole country indirectly transforming the viewer into a voyeur. And pleasure in seeing Tanaz and Bakhtiyar going at each other or Sherlyn Chopra stripping in my living room is just so awe inspiring left alone Rakhi and Elesh's raging hormones. The question still is what is different here, where is the choice. The viewer is just subjected to a superficial idea of the show being different perpetuated by the makers.

Bigg Boss is 'unique' because it about surviving in a house with 13 unknown people for 80 days - well unknown, not really. Same with Perfect Bride where 5 'lucky' - very questionable!, grooms get to select 5 'lucky' again - brides with a lil help from their matajis. How different is this from MTV Splitvilla minus the annoying mummyjis??? Big Switch goes along with same funda of living together in a slum with a hint of social initiative and I don't know who is benefiting from Pati, Patni aur Woh, again couples living together with children not of their own bearing trying to proof to the country who's the most compatible among the 4. Well if you were not already compatible you wouldn't be a couple, ideally speaking. So this is the 'living together' phase of reality show. Then DPL will get competition from DID whenever that begins. Has anyone heard of MPL yet??? When is Indian Idol, Saregamapa and the celebrity dance reality shows coming??? I'm eager to witness the variety on Indian Television.

But if you ask me what is good TV, I don't really know. I guess I've not seen it till now. Nothing that holds at least my attention long enough on Indian TV except the bulletins on channel no 32 - CNNIBN, not that its a flagship of good news TV but that's what I tune in to to see if its safe to venture out today. Guess that's what everyone one is doing - using available resources and hoping for something better.

P.S. - My favourite shows are HOUSE MD, HEROES and TRUE BLOOD. I consider these good TV. But I and people of my wavelength do not make the TRP generating masses so my liking is not a benchmark, you may just hate them.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://axeman-shiva.blogspot.com/2009/11/what-do-you-wanna-watch-on-tv-if-you.html' title='What do you wanna watch on TV? And I'm guessing you are on this page precisely for the same reason. I'm no expert on that subject! Sorry!

However, I did a little research and inadvertently stumbled upon some profile pages of my peers on facebook. I observed that most of my peers have a strong opinion on subjects close to sex, relationships, love etc etc. As I expected, many of them had vague, repulsive and unoriginal thoughts towards politics and religion. Someone says: I give a damn about religion. Another says: I give a f*** about politics, so and and so forth. Can't blame us can we? There really haven't been many leaders recently who inspire us. But is that the real reason or a mere excuse for us to live in denial.

I didn't vote this year and I ain't proud about it. But I do not regret it cause even if had the oppotunity I wouldn't have known whom to choose, but that is no excuse for me not to have an opinion. Infact, I chose not to be part of the mockery that Indian politics has become but as an individual I do have a political opinion and I urge the rest of you to have one too. If not buy one, there are lots of books available plus give facebook a miss for like 10 mins a day and read ibnlive or even yahoo... The opinion could vary from mild, moderate to high but one must have a say. Things like 'give a damn' is so damn uncool, you sound like a stupid bimbo irrespective of whether you use the men's room or the women's one! Who are you to give a damn! You have disrespected and disregarded our 'political' freedom movement and those who fought and died for you to have the very freedom to give a f****ing damn!

And if you 'give a damn' about politics and religion, you are in a way saying its ok for Mr. Raj Thakeray to say and do as he pleases, for Kasab to come to our country and kill our people, cause why should you care, you 'give a damn' to who dies where and how until it affects you or your kin. So next time you are updating your profile picture on facebook, spare a thought - for all does who died on 26/11 and please pray for them unless you decide to update your political opinion to: I'm thinking...

10 things you must not say to someone who has just lost his job!

<col style="width: 44pt;" width="59"> <col style="width: 164pt;" width="218"> <col style="width: 387pt;" width="516">

This is by no means an exhaustive list…

Question

My head

1

What next?

If I knew I wouldn't be jobless!

2

Don't worry!!!

Are YOU going to adopt me???

3

Take a break!

I'll break ur neck!

4

How come? I mean who would inspire good in us if villains ceased to exists. The common villains of our age are poverty, illiteracy, disease and corruption which will never cease to exists because these are the very tools that maintain a balance of power between the haves and the have nots. Its all part of a big master plan. Assuming one day these villains become extinct what will happen to our NGOs! How will they replenish their trust funds and on what grounds? On the contrary there will be more jobless people, more poverty, more disease and even more corruption.

The new fad to hit town this season is voting. However, the election fever subsided even before it could begin; with people's general disgust towards stone-aged policies and mega budget lies, as evident from the meagre voter turnout in Mumbai alone. The wealthiest city in India blatantly showed its m*ddl* finger to these elections and its contestants. I wonder why? Was it just too hot to step out on the most important day of your country? Perhaps, the government of the day should have taken proper measures to counter the temperature. A promise of free non-aerated, non-alcoholic beverages to those who take some interest in the welfare of the nation would have been a decent gesture considering they spend billions anyway on such a farcical exercise as 'The General Elections.' I don't have figures to prove my point but its no secret that political parties and their beneficiaries spare any effort in wooing the voters with cash, gifts and s**t load of lies.

Sometimes I wonder, if voting alone could set things right then what have we been doing the last 60 odd years? Did Obama Mania bite us in the bum making us wiser in the last 4 months? Or we just need something new every 6 months to make a lot of noise about and let it whimper away when we have something new to clamour about? The guess is yours...

Finally in another month we will have our coveted new government (Our Heroes) elected by wise men and women of our time who did indeed go out to exercise their right (as well as their fingers). Regardless, we needn't wait long to sigh and say - "Ah well, the next government will be better!" because there'll be new villains lurking around every corner to challenge our much celebrated heroes and our world will as usual remain as interesting and well balanced more than ever before.

The TISS Rape... Yet another saga unfolds...

This is a follow up to the comment I had made in a blog about the TISS Rape Case... the comment I made reads...

"Who did, how did, why did, where did, really did or didn't, consensual or provoked or whatever hell had broken out loose we will never know the exact truth no matter what the media, police or court says, we will never know so to say the TRUTH. But in this is a lesson for this generation... don't take the freedom accorded to you for granted, don't get high if you can't handle it, don't be 'cool' if you can't hack it... no one is perfect you just have to strive towards perfection... be conscious of your actions cause one little misadventure can ruin you and the life of others you love..."

Without making any moral judgements and keeping in the mind the maxim " to err is human " I strongly believe in the comment I made on a blog post I read recently about the TISS Rape Case which kinda reflected on the growing discontent about how the TRP driven media handles such sensitives issues like rape and murder. Well you can shout from the roof tops and give sermons in many a blogs about media sensationalism while trying to de-rationalize it in the context of materialism but ultimately its just human nature to make the most out of other people's misery... that's what our iconic TV reality shows are doing these days... So why blame the media when the devil resides in us, the consumers of commercially driven reality...

So also view this rape case as one more reality show only difference being this is unscripted, raw and unglamorous, you really do not want to participate in it as the neither the victim nor as the criminal but you will surely follow it as religiously as you would follow Rodies 6.0...

And while blaming the media have you ever considered the possibility that prevention is better than cure... I'm sure most of us are and will always remain unaware of what transpired between those individuals that night, so without making any moral judgements lets say that if those individuals had considered the consequences of their actions, its implications on themselves, their families, friends... had they even held back and thought about all the rights and wrongs taught in school and at home... had they drawn the line between fun and crime things would have turn out much different that what they are today.

You may have been saints in the good old days, but this world is a very unforgiving place, one mistake can erase 10000 deeds of kindness and 10000 more deeds of kindness cannot undo or reverse a single offense. Less said more done, your life finally is in your hands and in your moral distinctions - the choices you make... There is right, there is wrong and there's the chance to choose between them. After all, you are the boss!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://axeman-shiva.blogspot.com/2009/04/you-are-boss.html' title='The TISS Rape... Well done guys and gals!

Well it all started, as far as I can recall, with my seniors who did an excellent job within their capacities and exposed us to the art of film making. I would also say that my batch did a great job at raising the bar back in 2005-2006. Last years my juniors continued with the good job but without taking anything away from them I must say that this year's batch, at least 3 teams have outshone (if I could use the word) the rest of the batches with their creativity, research and and of course and hell lot of guts. Although there were a few glitches here and there, lack of attention to detail and few continuity errors, all said and done, a very good beginning for these youngsters. I see that a strong foundation has been laid and there is immense potential in these guys. I wish it only gets 'bigger and better' from here on... If you are an MICian and have missed the show on Tuesday, trust me you've missed quite a lot. So go grab copies of their films and feast your eyes on some really excellent work.

my tribute to MIC

Quite a wild tribute to MIC for completing 10 years! In the interests of saving time and avoiding a lot of boring chit-chat later, I'm Dr. Gregory House. You can call me Greg. I'm one of three doctors staffing this clinic this morning.
Dr. Cuddy: Short, sweet, grab a file.
House: This ray of sunshine is Dr. Lisa Cuddy. Dr. Cuddy runs this whole hospital so unfortunately she's much too busy to deal with you. I am a board-certified diagnostician with a double specialty of infectious disease and nephrology. I'm also the only doctor currently employed at this clinic who's forced to be here against his will. That is true, isn't it? But not to worry, because for most of you this job could be done by a monkey with a bottle of Motrin. Speaking of which, if you're particularly annoying you may see me reach for this. It's Vicodin - it's mine, you can't have any. And no, I do not have a pain-management problem, I have a pain problem. But who knows - maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm too stoned to tell. So, who wants me? (everyone stares) And...who would rather wait for one of the other two guys? (everyone raises their hands) Well, I'll be in Exam Room 1 if you change your mind. - [housisms.com]

For more Housisms follow this link: http://www.housisms.com/

My tribute to Dr. House

CLICK IMAGE TO ENLARGE, RIGHT CLICK 'SAVE IMAGE AS' TO DOWNLOAD

I made this desktop wallpaper in honour of the great growling grumpy grunting glowering Dr. Gregory House played by Hugh Laurie. Yadling's writings on tea time masti, I've decided to stir up my zest for writing. And before I forget, the real reason of my return to the blogosphere, has much to do with my inability to focus on the impending thesis and certain turn of events, that for good or for worst, aren't helping my quest to be free from the curse of thesis.

Whatever be the case, one thing is clear as crystal. The more I push towards perfection, the more lazy and uninterested I become. Perhaps a good old dose of Mom's sarcasm (she calls me slob whenever I exhibit bouts of behavioral disorders) would help me climb my way up from the bottomless pit that I've managed to get myself into. The good thing is this is not a first for me. I've experienced more lows than highs in life. So this must be a new low before a big high. That's that...

Proceeding to todays matter of discussion, have you ever been in situations where you know you are right? (I mean you can even bet your life on it) Yet others don't seem to think so, even after a hard fought rational debate, you still remain miles away from getting the point home. What do you do then?.... I switch off myself and accept everything the other has to say, even though its driving me insane. Have done this a countless number of times in my life so far. Sometimes I wonder why I allow myself to get into such situations. Why can't I avoid them? Why am I an easy prey for problems? You might say I should ask them question to an experienced shrink, but I bet the world's most reputed shrink will turn mental when confronted with the silliness of these problems. However, I shall keep my sanity intact and spare you the details (It's a vicious circle you know and the World is much too small a place.)

I wish my mind was immune to random problems so that I could prioritize each problem and deal with them with the right amount of attention they deserve.... be it thesis, friends, life and a whole lot of insignificant things. Wish brains could be upgraded to dual core! I bet Bill Gates or Steve Jobs should think about that, the next big business idea - human tissue-cell, organ upgradation! God, if He/She, really does exists, at least I believe so, creates so many new problems for man/womankind (better humankind) to deal with, although many would argue otherwise, I bloody don't understand why doesn't He/She update us with ways to tackle them. Guess that why some people have a fetish for self actualization.

I know my philosophic wisdom is a bit weak rather screwed up but don't blame me alone, its the kind of formal education I received and the tainted mass media as well.

Regards

Listen to Nipun Nair's tunes...

"The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it".

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

LISTEN

Chennai's Public Issue!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
Public Issue are Christopher- Vocals and Rhythm guitars, Nipun Nair – Guitars, Vinodh aka Tibu - Bass, Vinay – Drums. Three out of the four are students of visual communication at Loyola College, Chennai and Christopher, the vocalist is undergoing his B.com degree at Madras Christian College, Chennai. Like any other student with alternative talent or prodigy that does not confirm to parental or professorial standards, these youngsters are sacrificing a lot to make it to the big league.

Aged less then 20, this bunch of talented Madrasies are ready to take the Indian Rock scene by storm. They hate new age rock and are fans of pure rock of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Their inspiration being Mr. Bigg, Dave Mathews Band and Eric Johnson among a host of other legends, these rookies are well on the way to emulating the success of their icons after their triumph here in Manipal.

At the South Zone Finals, they keyed up the crowd with Mr. Big’s ‘Green-Tinted Sixties Minds’ and three other self composed songs which were equally well received with applause from the crowd. It was a no nonsense focused performance which didn’t include any sort of riposte unlike other few who went an extra mile with their efforts to gee up the crowd.

With impressive performances in Chennai and Bangalore under their belt, this band unlike any other that started out practicing in garages to the disapproval of their neighbours have come a long way and are here to stay. “The future is bright, there are loads of opportunities for bands like ours” says Vinodh aka Tibu who seems optimistic about the future of Rock and Rock Bands in India.

In the words of Nipun Nair, the Guitarist, “We are a progressive funk band and we love to have fun on stage. Hope it rubs off on the crowed too!” This young band, only a few months old is currently working on their original sound. Seems we are going to hear a lot about them in the years to come.

Rock-Stock and two smokin' Bands

Forty thousand watts of pulsating rhythm that was how Manipal played host to the third edition of Campus Rock Idol 2006-2007 at the Shanthala Football grounds on Saturday, January 28th, 2007.

Manipal, chosen to host the South Zone finals by DNA Networks, Bangalore, proved yet again that no other place can host a rock concert better as the rockers as well as the organisers were thrilled with the overwhelming response.

Cristopher, Vocalist of Public Issue who walked away as winners of the south zone finals, said, “They know their music, man! Manipal literally Rocks!” Public Issue, a Chennai based band, will be joined by runners up Haven from Bangalore in the all India Finals in Pune on 11 February, 2007 where they will compete with four other bands from across the country. The winners will be hailed as the best amateur rock band in the country and this would create a platform for these college students to turn professional rockers in the near future according to Ashwin Ramaswami, Event coordinator, DNA Networks.

It also rumoured that the winners of Campus Rock Idol 2006-2007 will get a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform an opening act for Iron Maiden during their tour of India this year. Ashwin said, “It depends on the management of Iron Maiden, it’s their call”, declining to comment further on the rumour.

Manipal is also likely to host the remaining three editions of Campus Rock Idol before the new cluster begins. Citing proximity and location as reasons, Ramaswami added that Manipal which boast of two dozen odd bands is an ideal place for such an event and could one day host the finals as well.

Kaushik of Slingshot from NITK, Calicut, winners of the Manipal Zone Finals said, “This is my second visit and it keeps getting better every time. I played here during the National Association of Students of Architecture (NASA) meet earlier this year and I find their the thirst for rocked is second to none”.

“They booed us off the stage at Bangalore, and here we won. This crowd is amazing”, cried Vinodh aka Tibbu of Public Issue who plays the bass commenting on the inspiring crowd involvement especially when they sang their self composed song ‘Delay’. This got the crowd on their feet and pulsating to rhythm of rock.

However, the highlight of the event was Sand Monkeys who despite losing out to Public Issue managed to generate louder cheers for they were the local MIT boys who qualified to compete with the other five bands. “We are the best rock band in Manipal”, said an elated Siddhartha Rao after qualifying for the South zone finals. The Hendrix – Dave Mathews Band song ‘All along the watch towers’ a clever choice got the crowd cheering for the home boys in an instant.

The runners up of the South Zone finals Haven, also treated the crowd to classics like Pearl Jam’s ‘Alive’ and other self composed songs like ‘This moment’ and ‘Thunderbolt’.

The event also saw stellar performances from two Bangalore based professional bands, Galeej Gurus and Synaps who were the headline acts for the evening. From heavy metal Korn and ACDC to the old school Red Hot Chilly Peppers and Rage against the Machine, both the bands showed the amateurs why they were where they were by taking the volumes to Richter-scale levels that saw the sound system jarring with disapproval. Forty thousand watts proved mere breakfast for these hoodlums of Rock.

Jerome Coelho who also judged the event gave away trophies to the deserving bands to conclude the proceedings of an extraordinary evening that saw progressive experimental rock of Public Issue overshadow the heavy metal rock of Haven to be acclaimed as the best amateur band of South India.

An Idle Mind

1: 30 am, late June 2006, yet another mundane Thursday. Seems like life has decided to take a break from any kind of constructive activity but that doesn’t mean I’m up to mischief. I’m just doing nothing at all and doing well at that. Sleep, eat, sleep, eat and occasionally ponder over things that are vague. Oh! How can I forget my only companion of boredom, the TV? What would a bored man do without TV? Eh… not much!

To bore you with more details, its summer holiday guys. Yes, it’s hot and yes there are loads of power cuts. Phew! Did I miss out anything? Yeah, I’m in Kolkata, sticky, sometimes stinky yet, I still believe it stands up to its name of being the City of Joy. Where else would you get three ‘footchcas’ for 2 bucks? And if you think the heat is getting to you, a stop at any air conditioned shop is always an option. Not for buying anything, just for the profound feeling of cool air on your sun burnt skin. Sad part being it hasn’t rained here off late. May be the Congress has bribed the rain Gods not to show mercy on this CPM ruled state, that’s what Buddho Babu would like us believe.

Ok that’s all the politics you going to get from me. Guess what brought me to Kolkata? Yeah, holidays right but how did I actually get here? On a flying bus, Deccan Air guys where first time fliers cue up at the terminal gate one hour ahead of the scheduled departure…. to get the best seats on the bus. That’s because the courteous Deccan Air people thought it’s a good idea to have free seating on their flights. Not because they want their esteemed customers to feel right at home (majority passengers in Kolkata use the bus, tram, metro and local trains to commute), but because it’s a useless exercise as only 70% of the seats in their flights get filled (only those seats which are cheap and bought months ahead). Not that 70% is a bad figure considering the bongs who fly do not mind spending 40 bucks on two slices of dry bread pasted with extra sweet marmalade to be sold as sandwich by Café Coffee Day aboard Deccan Air Flights.
To add spice to the rather bland service that Deccan Air provides, we get to spend more time inside the cool roofed Air Port before being thrown into the boiling Kolkata cauldron. The luggage takes almost an hour to unite with its respective owners. All in all, the World’s best low costs air liner is doing no harm to its reputation at all. Low cost means cheap service, a point proven. Yeah yeah, alright they broke my CPU cabinet, despite being itemized as fragile. Now is that enough reason for me to hate them. Anyways I’m returning with Deccan Air again, the poor man’s air line. Works well for me too ‘cause my pop doesn’t own a private jet, not my fault!

2:20 am, still Thursday. I’m sleepy now. Morning begins with the stickiest place on earth, the fish market. I hope they still sell at Rs. 100 a Kilo. I hate bargaining because they always get the better of me. And now’s just about the right time for a confession, I’m writing this ‘cause I want to make good use of time of course and the 12 hundred that I’ll have to shell out for this stupid monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers that I hired. Turns out another guy lends the same for mere 450 bucks a month. Someone kick me right were it hurts the most. I deserve it. Bloody bong friend of my bro’s, sucking the cash outta me. Okay guys, that’s about all the abuse I can endure in an hour. Good Morning! Hope you have a nice a cheerful day.

PS: I finally own a 1GB pen drive. No I didn’t steal. Tried to, but they forced me to buy it… ha ha… just kidding. (in case you actually think I stole it, I’ve the bill.)
